An exploration of color, block printing, and finding wonder, exactly where you are.
We’re at the height of spring here in the Bay Area.
While on walks, lately, I notice something new every day—a corner of a neighborhood now flourishing with white flower trees, the bulbs, and clusters of flowers. This week, I’ve been noticing these saturations of color. They’re so uplifting in the day to day hectic parts of life.
In a typical bhutta block print, like Devi’s popular Marigold Butti and Rani Bloom prints of 2025, the very first impression you typically make in blockprint is the outline. You might assume the ink would be black—that’s how you’d draw it on paper. The outlines I’ve preferred are a reddish brown. It reminds me of the giant California redwoods in all their majesty, their mossy greens and towering rusty brown trunks.
When I’m picking colorways for Devi’s collections, I’m referencing the coastal Bay Area hues more than I have realized. The deep greens of the bulbs against white flowers. The yellow daffodils. The swirling blues, greens, and greys of the Pacific Ocean. It’s not just color, it’s the very particular shades of these colors that evoke certain emotions in us. Nostalgia, comfort, curiosity, excitement.
The colors of blockprint are healing.
