On getting older and finding my footing.
I've been thinking about this question lately:
What does it look like to find comfort in the midst of discomfort?
The last few months have been some of the hardest I've had in a while. Between navigating life with a new high schooler (which, as any parent knows, is its own emotional ecosystem), the challenges of running a small business, and the general uncertainty of the world around us, there have been moments when it feels like clouds are gathering from every direction.
And yet, somewhere in the middle of it all, I realized something surprising:
I was okay.
Ten or fifteen years ago, this same convergence of things might have stopped me in my tracks. I would have internalized every problem and turned it into a story about myself:
I'm not a good enough mom. Maybe I don't have the business acumen for this. Someone else would never have gotten themselves into this mess.
But the woman looking back at me in the mirror doesn't believe those stories quite as easily anymore.
She has a little more humor about the absurdity of it all. She knows that difficult seasons eventually become seasons we survived. And even when dark clouds gather, she can still see the good things underneath them.
I think perhaps that's one of the quieter gifts of getting older.
The fires don't necessarily stop. You just have more evidence that you know how to walk through them.
Somewhere along the way, I think I stopped expecting myself to control all of it.
And maybe that's why I keep coming back to Devi.
I've always believed that small, beautiful things can make an ordinary day feel a little better.
When a woman chooses something from Devi, I want the experience to give her a little lift. I want the cotton to feel wonderful against her skin. I want her to put on a dress without wrestling with her body or wondering whether she's the wrong shape for it.
I want her to catch herself in the mirror and think, “Oh, I feel good in this!”
Maybe she wears it to dinner, to pick up her children, or simply on one of those days when everything feels like a little too much.
If something we've made brings her a small moment of comfort, beauty or happiness, that feels pretty meaningful to me.
The softness of cotton at the end of a long day. A quilted jacket that feels like a warm embrace. A favorite dress you reach for simply because it makes you feel good.
As the days become shorter, I hope you find a few moments to appreciate the person you've become, in all your beautiful, messy fullness.
Onward, with care and intention.
With gratitude,
Rashmin
